These day the controversy surrounding bleaching is not as loud as it used to be and this could be because of a number of reasons. 1. Since the rise of social media, more girls are comfortable in their own skin and realizing how much people appreciate their dark skin as opposed to believing there is one standard of beauty that was projected by the west. 2. People have learnt to accept we live in a diverse world and now when a bleacher is spotted she can easily be confused for someone who is simply coming from an alternative heritage. 3. There are better bleaching products so it is not so easy to spot someone who is bleaching due to the common side effect that used to show. 4. Bleaching retailers are finding alternative ways and words to sell and brand their products. ie. glow, getting rid of dark patches, etc.

Never the less, bleaching is still going on, and now it is no longer a sad reality, is just puzzling. When one is found out to be bleaching, the only question that comes to mind is either you are silly or living in another world.

In this world there is one thing that is for sure, there is no school or platform to educate African girls on social lifestyles. Nothing that educates them on chasing sugar daddies, nothing that educates them on bleaching, nothing that educates them on basic things like smoking or drinking and so on.

And one Ghanaian lady by the name of Mary Naana Ankomah was a victim of this. A very curvy pretty and attractive lady who was very popular on social media back in the days before instagram was popping in Africa. She details a story of how she was once a very popular and attractive lady on facebook with amazing curves, a pretty face, and a great complexion until she was approached by a random lady in 2013 who recommended a bleaching product to her.

She was beginning to use the product often and noticed her skin lightening. However, according to her, she hardly checks herself in the mirror when stepping out until one day she visited a friend in Dubai who questioned what is going on with her skin. Where she thought she was about to be complimented she faced a barrage of criticism. At this moment she hadn’t looked at herself in days and decided to. That’s when she realized her skin was deteriorating.

She would then use other bleaching products to fix the issue and cover the dark patches, but the more she did the more it destroyed her skin. After seeing the situation got worst, she began getting tattoos to cover up the stretch marks. She ended up spending lots of money trying to fix the situation. Eventually, she ended up damaging her skin to the point she couldn’t post herself on social media anymore. She lost friends, her partner, and more.

In her own words “I would have been at a bigger and better place if not for bleaching. This common bleaching has set me back and delayed my life.

I’m yet to start life all over again. I’ve lost everything”. But she finally found a cure, listen below as she details in the English/Twi video below.
