Share FacebookTwitterPinterestLinkedinWhatsappTelegramEmail 910 Ghanaians are increasingly rising up against what many see as an oppressive regime under President Akufo-Addo. What began as a protest to end illegal mining, known as galamsey, has escalated following the illegal arrests of demonstrators. The initial protest, which saw a turnout of between 150-250 people, quickly gained international attention after images and videos of young women and elderly protesters being arrested surfaced online. The public outcry extended beyond Ghana’s borders, with Ghanaians in New York holding solidarity protests. This global response has transformed the movement from just #EndGalamsey into the broader #FreeTheCitizens campaign, reflecting the growing frustration with the government’s handling of the situation. The arrest of well-known personalities like social media influencer Ama Governor further fueled the conversation, with celebrities such as Camidoh and Stephanie Benson using their platforms to condemn the government’s actions. Amidst mounting pressure, dancehall star Shatta Wale finally addressed the situation. However, his comments sparked controversy. Shatta Wale criticized those urging him to speak up, saying, “When the problem is around me [the music industry], e no be your concern, but when the problem is around you, then Shatta for come talk.” His remarks were perceived as dismissive, suggesting that the illegal mining crisis and its environmental impacts did not affect him personally, possibly due to his wealth. In the same audio, Shatta Wale alluded to the arrest of Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the leader of the Democracy Hub, which organized the protests, stating, “One person go gather you, for ein own good,” adding further ambiguity to his stance. Despite Shatta Wale’s polarizing comments, protests continue to grow, with many calling on more celebrities and influential figures to take a stand against both galamsey and the government’s response to peaceful demonstrations.
