Gh Illustrator Papa Oppong Takes Makola To Washington DC In USA And Hits Macy’s

Nothing wrong with dreaming big! That’s exactly what Papa Oppong is doing. The young man who began his career with colorful and beautiful illustrations first made a slight international buzz for himself after Kelly Rowland retweeted and illustration of her he had drawn.

The young illustrator attended Radford University to perfect his craft in fashion designing and is now reaching new heights as he looks to USA to make a name for himself.

Papa Oppong launched his Fall/Winter 2016 capsule collection entitled ‘Makola’ at the Washington Hotel. The collection was inspired by the women of Makola market in Accra, Ghana’s busiest market place. In his words “The market women of Makola seductively call out to you as you meander through its narrow paths…these women are powerful…layering their garments in the quirkiest manner, their planet-sized sun hats involved in a strong love affair with the barely existent African shade.”

Last Wednesday, I presented my F/W 16 collection entitled: A Celebration of Makola. Influenced by the market women of Makola Market, Accra…this theme came to me at a time when I was missing home and my people…the nostalgia was strong…so I decided to bring a piece of home to Washington DC…just a few feet away from the White House, at the W Hotel, I created my own mini Makola Market…??? -Papa Oppong ? #fashion #art #PapaOppong #ghana #africa

However, it didn’t end there with him. On his quest to success and making Ghana proud, the young illustrator now designer has his clothes exhibited in the popular American fashion chain store Macy’s which he took to share with his following on social media. See the images below.

It seems the success hasn’t yet caught up with the young man as he presented the images with the following words “It’s ready! So excited to have a look from my latest capsule collection: “A Celebration of Makola” in a Macy’s window! The feeling is UNREAL and I’m glad I get to represent my country in such a pretty manner!”
