Once upon a time for music lovers, those of us who managed to feel our pride of black found it in music burried deep deep deep in the underground corners of hip hop and soul music. Amazing talented music that technically never made it to international charts.

Artists like Eryka Badu, Ledisi, D’angelo, The Roots, and much more, who shared beautiful music that pop artists were scared to follow through because it wasn’t trending. However, social media has changed a lot for black culture. For one, African’s have managed to get hold of their own image projecting the reality of Africa to the world. And two, black Americans have also done the same exposing the harsh reality of the unjust political system they are entangled with.

Both these realities are changing the narrative of what it means to be black and/or African and the lies used to make some hide in their shell is now being eradicated with reality. It seems this cultural change is trickling to the top to some of our celebrities and artists who once were silent or nonexpressive on such issues, and reaching them and through their powerful voices tricking back down to those who still haven’t embraced it. And my friends, that’s what we call a pride movement.

As long as we remember to ensure we continue to be the financial and social beneficiaries of this movement we are on a safe track. With that said, Ciara’s new video ‘ROOTED’ is definitely on par with this movement. She served a wild extra hype video filled with Afro’s, black atire, berets, crump dancing and more.

According to her “I am blessed to be able to carry seeds of new life into this world,” Ciara said in a press release. “The foundation of love for my family and the pride for my culture has made me feel rooted in my life, and nothing can knock me down. I am also reminded through my trials and triumphs, everything I need to survive and thrive is rooted in me. Gender nor color of your skin can limit how far you will go in life.”
