The music, fashion and beauty mogul will be donating US$5million towards the battle against coronavirus via the Clara Lionel Foundation – the non-profit organisation she founded in 2012 in honour of her grandparents Clara and Lionel Braithwaite, to aid and fund education and emergency response programmes across the globe. According to the Clara Lionel Foundation website, the $5 million donation will be made to organisations such as Direct Relief, Feeding America, Partners in Health, The World Health Organisation’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, International Rescue Committee, and many more.“Protecting our frontline health workers and marginalised communities around the world requires getting ahead of it fast. The time to act is now.” It comes as no surprise that Rihanna stepped up in service of those in need during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. In 2014, Rihanna launched the Clara Lionel Foundation’s Diamond Ball which has raised $3 million towards health and education. The annual event also involved the attendance and support of some of America’s favourites, including Barack Obama, Brad Pitt, Lionel Richie, Kendrick Lamar, Dave Chapelle, to name a few. Her approach to raise funds for the underprivileged in 2017 made its way in fashion as Dior announced its partnership with Rihanna for their Spring 2017 collection where they released their popular, limited edition “We Should All Be Feminists” T-shirts, donating a percentage of its proceeds to the Clara Lionel Foundation. This year, she also collaborated with Parsons School of Design with the objective to support not one, but two charitable organisations; the Clara Lionel Foundation and Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Foundation. Rihanna’s most recent donation is one of many towards COVID-19 relief, other high-profile fashion designers and celebrities such as Chiara Ferragni, Donnatella Versace, Sergio Rossi and luxury powerhouse LVMH have all contributed to help combat coronavirus.
