4/ AFRICAN FASHION PARTICIPANTS ARE NOT FANS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Only in Africa are designers capable of participating in fashion shows of which you will never see it posted on their facebook or instagram. Yes social media is a fairly new concept in the world of fashion, as in it’s not yet fully merged as far as business is concerned, but it’s even much younger in Africa. I am not sure what the reason is, from Nigeria to Kenya, every country in Sub Sahara Africa except South Africa, have 100s of designers with very very quiet social media pages. Some have platforms that have not been updated in two years. It is very hard for media, mainstream or local, to cover designers with such platforms. Instagram may have increased social media participation of fashionistas in Africa, but only time will tell how effective it will be in aiding the relationship between mainstream media and African fashion. Nevertheless, this is what separates local fashion journalism from mainstream media.
