Ghana’s main fashion extravaganza is set to pause for 2021. The anticipated Accra Fashion Week 2021 Summer Harmattan edit will no longer take place this December. After long deliberation by FashionGHANA.com, we came to the conclusion that the event would be best halted until next year.

Accra Fashion Week was initiated with the purpose to provide a progressive platform for creatives within the Ghanaian fashion industry as well as brands interested in the African market. The objective was to fixate an event that will centralize focus on the integral trade and constructive aspects of the Ghanaian and African fashion industry.

“African creatives are now beginning to develop the necessary brand as a whole to interact internationally. The pandemic has destabilized businesses, all whilst at the same time helping some of them conform or grow in their online capacity. It is essential for designers to be efficient and understand the essentials of a fashion week and its trade benefits, as opposed to doing it for the clout. The world is changing not only even for the mainstream industries, but we also can not do a show for the simple fact of doing a show, that is of no interest to us, it has to be innovative, futuristic, and most of all productive. That is what we have always done in the past and will continue to do even if it means restrategizing with the current climate of fashion” – Nana Tamakloe, CEO of FashionGHANA & Accra Fashion Week.

Accra Fashion Week’s Award Winning Virtual Show

Accra Fashion Week which executed its first virtual show since the pandemic saw the virtual edition which was awarded for Ghana’s best virtual show. The event helped their youtube (https://www.youtube.com/accrafashionweek) page surpass over 4 million views and still counting. The only event page in the nation, concerts, and pageants included, to surpass such a figure.

According to the AFWk event planners, they are yet to decide if they will return in October, or maintain their event in the December period.

What Is In Store For December?

However, it has been confirmed the annual model competition ‘Face Of Accra Fashion Week’ 2021 will still proceed in light of the setup for the intended Accra Fashion Week 2021 idea. The show will also host a designer competition, as well as a very intense model competition which for the first time will be executed externally outside of Accra Fashion Week.

Guest will witness 30 plus models battle it out for the Face of Accra Fashion Week title with a finale set to be held in December. The face of Accra Fashion Week was launched in 2016 alongside the event, with the aim to be a launching pad for aspiring models in Ghana. In 2016, the Accra Fashion Week team noticed the neglect of fashion models with international potential and created the competition to bring light to such models.
