Share FacebookTwitterPinterestLinkedinWhatsappTelegramEmail 1.4K Ama Governor, the young Ghanaian lawyer and social media influencer, is making headlines once again, and this time, she’s not holding back. Ama, who was among 42 protesters arrested during the Democracy Hub protest, has accused the authorities of treating her and others unjustly. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DAVo0PUq7T7/ The demonstration, held on Sunday, 22nd September 2024, at the 37 Intersection in Accra, erupted into chaos, with protesters clashing violently with the police. The group was rallying against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which has been wreaking havoc on Ghana’s environment. Ama Governor, who was handcuffed as she appeared in court, didn’t mince her words when speaking to the press. “I want to go so they grant us bail, 48 hours, no food, no water,” she shouted while showing her handcuffs. “You want to see a 26-year-old lawyer in this because she said ‘Stop Galamsey?’ That’s our only crime, ‘Stop Galamsey!’” There’s no reason why this many police men should be following Ama Governor #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse pic.twitter.com/iviGYB7f4L — BigD (@DarlDessi) September 24, 2024 The 42 demonstrators, including some of the group’s leaders, have now been denied bail, and their next court appearance is set for 8th October. In a statement released by the police, they claimed the demonstrators engaged in acts of lawlessness, blocking roads, damaging police property, and assaulting officers. The statement, signed by ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs for the Ghana Police Service, emphasized that the protesters would face the full force of the law. Ama Governor’s dramatic court appearance has sparked a wave of mixed reactions online. A polarizing figure, Ama, whose real name is Elorm Ababio, has never shied away from controversy. From her outspoken activism to her public discussions about her sexuality, the 26-year-old has faced her share of public scrutiny. Despite these challenges, she was finally called to the Ghana Bar in May 2024, a victory that was celebrated by many of her followers.
