Share FacebookTwitterPinterestLinkedinWhatsappTelegramEmail 6.1K Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe was born on 14 June 2002 in Cotonou, Benin, and grew up there and in Lagos, Nigeria. She is Nigerian and of the Yoruba ethnicity. She is one of Afrobeats’ most prominent names among female artists, and arguably among all artists in general. This is likely due to the powerful influence of Don Jazzy and the backing of her Western music label, and we all know how western corporations have helped the image amongst African American stars (sarcasm). The worse of African American women being pushed by white owned western labels, is this the future for Afrobeats and African Female artists? Well either the road assigned for Ayra Starr kicks off with a mild start of half naked presentations and a sex symbol that in the long run ends with a stereotype of a pseudo sex-selling image in her records. Or, alternatively we are dealing with a lady who has absolutely zero sense of fashion. Instead she chose to were a swimsuit to the venue, whilst carrying the reputation of afrobeats. Ayra Starr’s fashion choices are often characterized by bikinis, bralettes, mini skirts, and other revealing outfits. It seems as though someone has convinced her that showing skin is an essential part of her career. As seen above, Ayra Starr is undeniably beautiful and does not need to sell herself as a sex symbol to excel. Her lean figure and constant semi-nudity on stage are concerning and unnecessary. She urgently needs a skilled stylist—not one who will dress her in the monotonous, overdone brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton, which she already wears for red carpet appearances—but one who can style her in creative Nigerian and African brands. If she carries on presenting herself like a tart, it will become a disturbing factor on many people’s lips. Whoever is advising her to perform on stage looking like a belly dancer is misleading her. We want to see fashion that represents Nigeria, Yoruba culture, and Lagos. And it doesn’t have to be tribal, it can be trendy! She should look to Lagos Fashion Week, South Africa Fashion Week, Accra Fashion Week, and Hub of Africa Fashion Week for inspiration. Bring Africa up and quite perpetuating a half-naked Lil Kim/Megan Thee Stallion chicken leg belly dancer image that’s embarrasses the nation, the region, and the continent she represents on her world tours. No one opposes dressing provocatively or having sex appeal, but there is a time and place for everything.
