Alongside issues like skin bleaching, weave wearing is one of the most complained-about practices among Africans. The question is, why do Black women continue to wear weaves? As an African woman, it has become clear to me that wearing weaves in the modern world has transcended the goal of attracting men and now serves as a reflection of one’s status among other women. Some girls feel inferior when they are not wearing the hair of white women among their peers. It’s almost as if they believe it symbolizes that they are not wealthy enough to buy one. If we are to be honest, not wearing a weave sends a message that men do not desire you enough to spend money on you to buy a useless hair extension. The mere fact that you aren’t wearing one implies you are below those who are. However, this cultural view is primarily adopted by those who wear weaves. Many individuals outside this group, including some natural-haired African women, view weave wearers as insecure women who are not at peace with their own appearance. In fact, most people tend to pity weave wearers, especially when they observe their self-esteem levels with and without the weaves. One particular group that has been most vocal about their appreciation for natural-haired women is African men. Despite the rumors and misconceptions, it has nothing to do with their baser instincts. The preference for natural hair among African men is rooted in deeper, more meaningful reasons. Natural hair has always been a powerful symbol of beauty and identity within the Black community. For many Black men, there’s a strong preference for Black women who embrace their natural hair. Here are six compelling reasons why:1PrideA man feels immense pride knowing his woman can look beautiful and receive compliments even in her most natural state. Natural hair represents authenticity and confidence. It signifies that a woman is comfortable and proud of her true self, which in turn makes her partner proud to stand beside her.2EngagementEngaging with your woman in play fights or intimate moments without the worry of damaging property, like a weave or extensions, is a significant benefit. Natural hair allows for more spontaneous and carefree interactions. There’s a freedom in knowing that you can be playful and affectionate without the constraints or worries that often come with artificial hairpieces. 3Financial Wisdom Regardless of how wealthy a man may be, the idea of spending substantial amounts of money to cover up a woman’s natural beauty can be unsettling. Many men prefer that resources be spent on experiences or investments that benefit the relationship or family as a whole. The money saved by avoiding expensive hair treatments and weaves can be redirected to more meaningful uses.4Authentic BeautyMany women who wear weaves undergo a dramatic transformation when they take them off. This is often because they spend more time caring for their weaves than their own natural hair. When the weave comes off, the contrast can be stark. On the other hand, women who nurture their natural hair tend to look consistently beautiful, as their hair is a genuine part of their overall appearance.5Cultural ConnectionNatural hair often represents a deeper connection to cultural heritage and identity. Black men appreciate when Black women embrace their roots, both literally and figuratively. Natural hair can be a powerful statement of cultural pride and solidarity, which resonates deeply within the community. It signifies a shared journey and mutual respect for one’s origins and heritage. 6Health and AuthenticityNatural hair is often healthier than chemically treated or heavily styled hair. By embracing their natural hair, Black women often avoid the damage that comes from harsh chemicals and excessive styling. This focus on health and authenticity is appealing to Black men, who value a partner’s well-being and prefer the genuine beauty that comes from a natural, healthy appearance. The preference for natural hair among Black men goes beyond aesthetics. It encompasses pride, engagement, financial wisdom, authentic beauty, cultural connection, and health. These reasons collectively highlight the deep appreciation for natural hair as a symbol of true beauty, identity, and love.
