On April 9, 1999 while he was preparing to go on a working visit, he was shot in the back, while he was reviewing the troops before boarding. According to Alia Bare Mainassara, the perpetrators of this act are elements of his presidential guard then led by Colonel Daouda Malam Wanké. Three people lost their lives trying to help him namely; -Ali Saad, Consul in Libya – Lieutenant Idé, officer of the presidential guard – Malam Souley, driver of the President Even with support from the ECOWAS Court of Justice, the state and judicial system of Niger have remained deaf to the calls for opening an independent inquiry of events that ensued on that fateful day.
