Most boys and men often get involved in this industry hoping to get next to girls of which outside of this they will never get close to. However, the darkest of minds also lurk in this arena pulling all tricks to lure models into some of their horrifying objectives hence why models need to be extra careful. Kidnapper……. Be careful…. Last year I received a phone call from an unknown number, I picked…what I heard next was ” are you on your way already “?? I got confused and asked ” my way to where.?. He said I was on a fashion show and they have tried to reach me on phone but it wasnt going through and the fashion show was that same day… So I asked in surprise what fashion show exactly he didnt mention the name but told me the casting I came recently, I was sucessfully selected on board and because of my portfolios they saw on IG, they were going to pay me a higher amount which he mentioned, … I remembered i went on a casting a week before so I was totally convinced that was it… He told me the show will start at 9pm ,and i was supposed to be earlier before that time… Though I was totally convinced but I had doubts why the event will have their show at Nkokor above all the places in Accra… So I called a male friend of mine to company me so that it can ensure my safety …. After the long journey we got there at 7:43 that night… I placed a call to him that I was at Nkorkor… He told me to give him some minutes and was on his way to come pick me up…. I waited another 10mins he still wasnt there so I placed another call, he picked and told me he was the person in a white car and asked if i was standing alone .. Told him I was with a male friend… All of a sudden he ended the call and I saw the car drove off. I called several times but it went to voice mail… I continued calling while I was still standing late that night at Nkorkor… Finally it was passed the time he told me the show will start..He called later and said why did I came with someone and I was thinking bad of him, told him if he wasn’t a bad person he would have come around, he ended the called and never called again… We were still out sitting with a man who seems to be selling fried rice late that night until it was 12, he was ready to pack and close we had no choice than to move around the area hoping he was going to call back and give reasons why he drove off when I told him I was with someone… It was 2am already, feeling sleepy and tiring that we went to book a guest house to rest and continue our journey the following day… All I imagined was what if I came alone?? And why would he see me with a friend and refused to pick me up ignoring that there was a fashion show which he needed me badly onboard like he explained to me on phone, iwould have been either Kidnap, used for rituaI or even ganged Raped…i blocked the number on my journey back home and never heard from him again…. Months later, just tonight, I received a message from a number on whatsapp… He said Hi and asked if I was not coming… I asked coming for?? he asked for my call line to explain further, I gave out my new number and it was the same voice with a different strategy… He told me the management wants me on board now and that I should be on my way to Nkorkor, this time around I got his tricks and told him I wasn’t interested and ended the call… I pmed him and told him I was going to get him arrested and all he could say was “I am Waiting” then blocked my number” Above is the story as the model sent to us. There is no confirmation of what would have happened to her if she had gone but it is fairly obvious it won’t have been a positive result. As someone who has worked in fashion and modelling for a while, I won’t advice any one not to get involved but definitely I will advice parents and aspiring models to be extra careful. Even if you lose jobs for being extra careful it is more than worth it. Always take company whereever you go even in public places. If you do not have company then do try to avoid it. It’s not only the unknown people that pull this stunt. Some time in 2017 a popular photographer requested to work with a model that we managed by communicating with her via her instagram page. Upon going to meet him she passed by the office and told us. We quickly suggested one of our staff joins her only for the purpose of helping out to ensure there were great results from the shoot. Upon arriving at the destination, he acted in the same manner as soon as he saw the model with company. He got furious and told her on the phone he can’t work with her, and that she shouldn’t have arrived with company, as my colleague reported to myself. I quickly requested the number of the ‘popular photographer’ and gave him a call. I did threaten him I was about to report him to the police and publish his acts on FashionGHANA.com, of which he began to beg and beg that we don’t, even began crying on the phone. We eventually put the issue to rest and I warned him if anything if this sort was to happen again he will wish he never entered the fashion world. The reason why we include this is because again, it is not only the unknown and the un-certified that are luring young girls by their ignorance. In fact established creatives are also doing the same. In fact it is the established creatives who are also abusing their status. They are fully aware in the light of society, a young girls words could never overcome their reputation. So once again ladies, always take company, our police and media is not like that of the west, if you come out hurt, robbed or exploited from any of these scenarios you will just have to suck it in. And if you come out dead there is no telling when the Ghanaian police will find you, or even start looking for you. Also in addition to that, do be mindful of what kind of images you post. Despite how many women’s rights organisations claim it is not a mans right to act upon a woman regardless of what she wears, reality has it you are most likely to be targeted if you present yourself in a sexual provocative manner. If it has nothing to do with your role as a model to present semi nudity or nudity then do your best to avoid it, if not then be mindful you will end up on the radar of sexual predators.
