Nigeria’s Israel Adesanya returns to the ring to reclaim his title from Dricus Du Plessis, who defeated him last year. The tension between the two is intensifying, especially as last year Dricus decided to include rhetoric that made the fight an issue of race. Dricus, a white man in South Africa, represents the legacy of colonization, while Israel is a Black African fighter.

Adding to the tension, recent accusations of afrophobia have heightened cultural rifts between South Africa and Nigeria, which stemmed from the participation of Chidimma in the Miss SA 2024 pageant. So now the question on the table is, would South Africans be supporting their African brother or their European colonizer that till today still shows many act of injustice on their own land.

Regardless of the outcome, the fight will send rippling messages to the world, hence why Israel took the opportunity to stand off with Dricus for their upcoming fight on 18th August 2024 with a symbolic message by wearing a Shaka Zulu Necklace.

As we are not a boxing blog, it is this iconic fashion statement that has landed with fight on our website. His donning of the black Shaka Zulu Necklace could imply many things. This is definitely a challenge against the white colonizers of South Africa of which Shaka Zulu fought against. It also means he shows his solidarity with the black South Africans who are at the mercy and suffering of their European land owners.

Regardless of the meaning, one thing for sure is this fight is going to carry a lot of tension, and as Africans we can only hope that doesn’t work against the interest of Israel Adesanya.
