Deep in the North of Thailand is a tribe known as the Kayan Tribe, also referred to as the “Karen long-neck people”, who are quite popular for wearing neck rings. Its women are known to wear brass neck rings made by Burmese men, which appear to lengthen their necks.
As part of their traditional identity, women of the Kayan tribe in northern Thailand wear metal coils around their necks. They begin with a single-coil when they are five years old, and as they grow older, the coils lengthen. Although it is a dying tradition, it is still practiced in some of their villages.
For women, it is a sign of beauty.
