In a historic win, Filipino-American Chelsea Manalo made waves on Wednesday by becoming the first Black woman to be crowned Miss Universe Philippines. The 24-year-old, born to a Filipino mother and African American father, has been celebrated on social media for breaking traditional beauty norms in the country.

“Chelsea’s win challenges our ingrained preference for Eurocentric beauty features and lighter complexions in our nation,” wrote one user on an Instagram post from Miss Universe Philippines’ official account. “Filipino beauty standard shattered into pieces,” read another comment, capturing the public’s sentiment. Representing Bulacan, Manalo triumphed over 52 other contestants from across the archipelago and abroad. The event, held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay, saw Manalo shine as she progressed to the top five finalists. When asked how she would use her beauty and confidence to empower others, Manalo responded, “As a woman of color, I have always faced challenges. I was told that beauty has standards, but I learned to believe in my mother, in myself, and uphold my values.” She added, “Because of these beliefs, I am already influencing many women who are facing me right now,” addressing the packed arena with pride.
