The incident unfolded when Damien Pickett, a Black co-captain, requested a group of White individuals to relocate their pontoon, allowing space for the Harriott II Riverboat to dock. Rather than complying with the simple appeal, they responded with aggression, assaulting Pickett. In a show of solidarity, Black men and some women intervened, repelling the attackers and coming to Pickett’s rescue. Among these courageous figures, one Black man stood out, utilizing a white folding chair as an unexpected defensive tool. Referred to as the “folding-chair-man,” 42-year-old Reggie Gray has earned heroic stature within the Black community, symbolizing resilience and defiance.

Accessories such as phone cases, earrings, key chains, and household items like mugs further allude to the enduring impact of The Montgomery Uprising. A single folding chair, once a mundane item, has indelibly etched itself into Black American history as an enduring emblem of resistance.

Undoubtedly, any symbol of Black empowerment, including “the chair,” may provoke unease among certain segments of White society. However, such apprehension is irrational. The right of Black individuals to protect themselves from physical harm is unequivocal, and if a folding chair becomes the chosen means of defense, so be it. The chair embodies the essence of Black resistance and stands as a reminder that resorting to violence is not its message. Instead, it signifies the determination to stand against injustice. While conventional weapons like firearms and knives typically come to mind, recent events have highlighted the potency of everyday objects, reinforcing the Black community’s enduring strength and resourcefulness.
