This event, organized by Global Citizen in partnership with pgLang and the Rwanda Development Board, aimed to highlight African cultural industries and address pressing issues such as youth empowerment and economic opportunities across the continent. Legend graced the stage with a mesmerizing floor-length white and blue gradient ensemble, redefined contemporary African couture. The design, which blends a classic tailored suit with flowing drapery, perfectly encapsulated the essence of Rwandan culture while exuding international sophistication. The structured white jacket maintained a sharp, masculine elegance, while the cascading fabric added a soft, regal touch reminiscent of the mushanana—Rwanda’s signature ceremonial attire. The single-shoulder draped fabric, a signature element of the mushanana, was subtly incorporated into the design, reinforcing the seamless fusion of heritage and contemporary luxury. A standout moment of the evening was John Legend’s attire—a bespoke creation by Rwanda’s premier fashion house, Moshions. Founded in 2015 by designer Moses Turahirwa, Moshions is celebrated for its innovative fusion of traditional Rwandan aesthetics with contemporary fashion. Turahirwa, born in Kibogora Village, Nyamasheke District, is the fourth of five children. Initially pursuing civil engineering, he earned an Advanced Diploma in the field before transitioning to fashion. In 2021, he obtained a master’s degree in Collection Design from Polimoda Fashion School in Italy. For the Move Afrika concert, Turahirwa drew inspiration from the traditional Rwandan mushanana—a flowing garment typically worn during ceremonial events. He reimagined this classic attire to resonate with modern sensibilities, crafting a sleek ensemble that paid homage to Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage. As Legend graced the stage, his outfit flowed effortlessly with his movements, amplifying the emotion behind every note. Performing hits like “All of Me” and “Ordinary People,” his presence was further enhanced by the striking aesthetics of his attire. The backdrop of the Move Africa concert, with its rich cultural motifs and vibrant lighting, complemented his ensemble perfectly, making for a truly iconic moment in Rwandan entertainment history. Beyond his own ensemble, Legend also ensured his backup singers were adorned in Moshions’ designs, reinforcing the unity and elegance of the performance. Their ethereal white outfits, harmonizing with his own, reflected a cohesive visual narrative that celebrated Rwandan craftsmanship on an international platform. John Legend’s performance was as captivating as his attire. His soulful melodies resonated with the audience, creating an atmosphere of unity and celebration. The fusion of his musical artistry with Moshions’ design underscored the event’s mission to celebrate African culture and creativity. The collaboration between John Legend and Moshions at the Move Afrika concert exemplifies Rwanda’s emergence as a hub of innovation and cultural pride. The nation’s commitment to fostering creative industries and addressing societal challenges has positioned it as a model for sustainable development in Africa. As Rwanda continues to celebrate its heritage while embracing modernity, it offers a blueprint for other African countries striving for progress and unity. get The Look/Outfit here.
