One of the best backdrops for photography purposes, muslin is a lightweight material that can be used as a solid-looking background when hung flat or can be draped over surfaces to transform the look of a picture. However, for Thandiwe Muriu, going against the norm is the drive for his success. Instead of using the usual muslin backdrops for portrait shoots, Thandiwe rather has a preference for African prints to match the costume on the model. The photographer first put his African print camouflage background to test in his 2015 Camo Series where he shot several African print outfits on their respective fabric-matching backdrops as seen below. To him, these camouflage backdrops add uniqueness to his work and set his brand aside from the rest of the photography clique. It is the award-winning photographer’s desire to celebrate, promote and popularise African prints through his photography. In 2020, Thandiwe brought the second part of his Camo Series, five years later. He enlightened on the project, saying: “The Camo series is a labor of love straight from my heart. It is a celebration of all things vibrant, beautiful and uniquely African… a celebration of me and you.
