INTERVIEW: From Angolan Village To Street Walking Fashion Influencer; Meet Zalia, The Stylista Shaking Up Europe

Edith Ngonga, widely known as Zalia, was born and raised in a small village in Angola. Coming from a family of peasants, she moved to France a year and seven months ago. Although she has no formal training in fashion, she holds a high school degree in accounting and management. In France, she studied early childhood education for a year.

fG: How did you source your clothes when you started?
Zalia: For my first look, I bought the skirt from Shein, boots from Primark, the bag from Shein, and the blouse was from Jenifer.

fG: What inspired you to become an influencer?
Zalia: I chose this path to restore confidence in our black beauty. I wanted to showcase the elegance and strength of our natural features.

fG: How important do you feel it is to represent natural African hairstyles?
Zalia: I carry a great responsibility with my afro hair because, in one way or another, I represent many black women like me. I have a duty to show the world the beauty of our hair and to encourage the next generation not to feel the need to straighten their hair. My representation with afro hair is very important in promoting self-acceptance and pride in our natural beauty.

fG: Don’t you feel shy when walking down the street?
Zalia: I never feel shy parading on the streets of France. Today, I carry great self-confidence. When I walk, I feel like the most beautiful woman on the planet with the most powerful hair in the world, hair that carries stories of strength, courage, and determination.

fG: What are your three favorite brands?
Zalia: I currently appreciate two African brands, @veekeejames and @Claudekameni. My goal is to gain visibility and collaborate with big brands in the fashion world.

fG: Your work is inspiring. We wish you all the best. Before we close, what tips would you give to any girl looking to be an influencer?
Zalia: For anyone who wants to be an influencer, I advise you to work with what you love. When we show something with love, our message is transmitted more clearly. Most importantly, be someone who influences positively.
