The competition that sees only girls fairer than snow is steadily loosing much of it’s popularity and crumbling into a non entity. Almost like Miss Universe….until a black girl wins. Nigerian Darego Wins Miss World In 2001 For years pageants like Miss World and Miss Universe have forever seen nothing but white and ‘a couple asian’ women win their titles, whilst Africans and blacks are celebrating top fives, or the ‘African’ title given in the competitions. This is said with the exception that in 2001 a Nigerian by the name of Agbani Darego was the first and last black girl to win. However, with Miss Universe’s recent move for reward a black girl with the beauty title right which came almost 10years (8 to be exact) after Leila Lopez (from Angola) win in 2011, is there pressure on Miss World to fix it’s brand and for the second time in history acknowledge the beauty of black women? Or are they going to continue crumbling down the road of unpopularity and irrelevance. Or would it be too obvious if a black girl wins Miss World so they may divert a bit and give it to an Indian or some alternative beauty? I mean let’s know lie as if we all don’t suspect there is quid pro quo for the international title. We would be silly to think they will ever refuse money. But at some stage, there are some branding benefits that will secure the titles prestige ahead of finance. Well, it’s not hard to call. Although if a black girl does win Miss World there will surely be a celebration that Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, Miss Universe, Model Of The Year and Miss World are black. Even if just for the principle of it. The event takes place this weekend in London. No need to strap yourself to your TV for it, just visit fashionghana and you will know if a black girl wins or not!
