VIDEOS: Congolese Women & Children Celebrate As M23 Freedom Fighters Liberate Their Towns

In the early hours of January 26, 2025, the city of Goma in eastern Congo erupted in celebration as M23 forces liberated the city from the oppressive grip of FARDC forces, FDLR militias, and foreign mercenaries. The liberation marked not just a military victory but a moment of freedom and renewed hope for the women and children who have endured years of suffering under the tyrannical rule of Felix Tshisekedi’s government.

The streets of Goma transformed into a festival of joy as women dressed in vibrant traditional fabrics led impromptu dances and sang songs of freedom, joined by children laughing and playing freely for the first time in years. These were the same women who had endured unimaginable hardships, raising families amidst conflict and oppression. Their celebrations were not just about the end of tyranny but also a symbolic reclaiming of dignity and hope for the future.

M23’s victory is rooted in justice and sovereignty. Comprised largely of Congolese fighters who had been exiled and marginalized under Tshisekedi’s regime due to their tribal heritage, M23 fought not as outsiders but as native sons and daughters reclaiming their homeland.
