The collection focuses on the design of hostels used to segregate and control non-white populations in South Africa. Inspired by apartheid architect Henrik Frensch Verwoerd, these structures were crafted to isolate and dehumanize their inhabitants. “Deterritorialization,” as explored in this collection, highlights the process by which social relations tied to a territory are altered, mutated, and destroyed. This transformation leads to the creation of a new territory through reterritorialisation. BOYDE’s collection powerfully underscores this concept, using fashion as a medium to reflect on and critique the brutal history and ongoing impacts of apartheid architecture.
