A new TV show is out, set to reflect the lifestyles of a Ghanaian royal family living in Ohio. The Agyekum sisters, who enjoy an opulent lifestyle as the children of royalty from two of Ghana’s richest and most influential kingdoms, are experiencing their 20s in Columbus, Ohio.
According to them, they are descendants of one of the most prominent kingdoms in Ghana. However, back in Columbus, Ohio, where the Agyekums live, nearly nobody knew that.
Things changed when they became the subject of a reality TV show, “Royal Rules of Ohio.” However, Ghanaians are not responding well to the misrepresentation of Ghanaian culture and lifestyle within the show, and have expressed great dissatisfaction with the visuals, particularly those displayed in the trailer posted by the BBC. Many criticized the sisters for carrying themselves in a manner deemed inappropriate, with some objecting to their revealing clothing, others criticizing their choice of hairstyles and weaves, and some mocking the father’s beard and its odd dye.
In a section of the video, one of the sisters states, “It’s mostly the Ghanaians that know we come from a royal lineage.” This statement is highly questionable, as prior to this video, most Ghanaians were unaware of this family. A Ghanaian woman replied in the comment section, saying, “…sorry, we do not know these people.” Another asked, “So which royal family in GH do they associate with?”
Others piled onto this and expressed themselves in the comment section, see it below.
On behalf of FashionGHANA.com, as much as we are advocates for natural hair and we do resonate with some of the critique, we can definitely say we appreciate the show for not sinking into the degrading, violence projection most TV shows have imposed on black women. At least for once, black women can watch themselves without being downgraded.
